Understanding Common Heart Conditions in Dogs

  1. Mitral Valve Disease (MVD): This is one of the most common heart conditions in dogs, particularly in small breeds like Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. MVD occurs when the mitral valve degenerates, leading to improper blood flow and eventual heart failure if left untreated.
  2. Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM): DCM is a condition where the heart muscles weaken, leading to enlarged chambers and reduced heart function. Certain breeds, such as Doberman Pinschers and Boxers, are predisposed to DCM.
  3. Arrhythmias: Dogs can also experience irregular heart rhythms, known as arrhythmias, which can be caused by various factors, including genetics, underlying heart disease, or metabolic imbalances.
