Don’t Forget to Bring a Towel. Towel Day, May 25th

Towel Day is an annual tribute to the late author Douglas Adams.  On this day, Fans carry a towel with them to demonstrate their appreciation for the books and the author, as referred to in Adams’ The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. And so it begins… “ A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapors;...

World Turtle Day – May 23rd

Happy World Turtle Day Started 12 years ago by American Tortoise Rescue, to increase awareness and education on one of the world’s oldest creatures. Turtles have been around for about 300 million years.  About half of 328 know species known today are listed as threatened or endangered. If you would like to pitch in this World Turtle Day, here are five tips from the American Tortoise Rescue. Never buy a turtle from a pet shop, as it increases demand from the wild. Never remove turtles from the wild unless they are sick or injured. If a turtle is crossing a busy street, pick it up and send it in the same...

What is Carob?

The two typical questions I get, from customers are, “That’s not chocolate is it?” and “What is carob?”  Carob is not chocolate and is OK  for both your dog and yourself.  It is free of the alkaloid and addictive effects of caffeine and theobromine present in cocoa. The tree (Ceratonia siliqua) is from the legume (pea) family. It grows anywhere citrus can be grown. Typically it is found in the Mediterranean. You may have also heard carob trees called St John’s bread or the locust bean. Carob comes from a tropical pod that a contains sweet, edible seeds. The fruit of...

National Dog Bite Prevention Week – May 20th – 26th

This week is National Dog Bite Prevention Week.  It is very important to help educate not only dog owners but non dog owners on how to prevent a dog bite.   An average of 45 million people are bitten by dogs a year.  800,000 Americans receive medical attention for those bites.  There are a number of things we can do to help lower these numbers. 1. Properly training your dog goes a long way.  Making sure your pet can understand and complete basic commands, like sit, stay and come. 2. Socializing your pet is important to enable them to feel comfortable in different...

Earth Day and your pets Carbon Paw Print

Tomorrow many us will be taking part in the 42nd Annual Earth Day.  I remember learning about the environment and the effect we all have on it.  For years, I have tried to change small habits in my daily life to become more green and reduce my own carbon foot print.  What about my pets?   There must be better choices I could be making to have greener pets.  After some research, I found a few simple things I could do. Use biodegradable poop bags. Spay and neuter to reduce the overpopulation Making your own dog food from locally grown or organic vegetables.  This eliminates...

Senior to Senior Program

At the Pawfest event here in Largo, FL we meet a wonderful lady named Fran.  She volunteers with the Pinellas County Animal Services for a program called Senior-to-Senior. Tragically as the shelters  fill  during these years of economic hardship, the number of senior pets has also increased.  They are relinquished due to ill health, incontinence, other age-related issues, lack of funds, or the owner passing away.  These older pets are very likely to remain in the shelter for the remainder of their life or be euthanized to make room for more adoptable animals. This great program is trying to help these loving pets enjoy their remaining life in a happy home....

Pet ID Week 4/15/12 – 4/20/12

Did you know there was a Pet ID week?  Lets take advantage of it and learn why your pet should have some kind of  identification. The best chance of having your pet returned safe and sound is through their ID.  One out of three pets get lost at some point in their life. Sadly 90% of pets without current ID are never returned to their families.  There a few different types to chose from. 1.  Dog Tag – They are usually plastic or metal with your pet’s name and your contact information.  I recommend using your cell phone number.  Think about it. ...

My First Dog – Early 1970’s Family Film Recovered

We had an old family film digitized and posted it onto our YouTube site. It’s from the early 1970’s in West Milford, NJ and has footage of me (Trina Messano) and my first dog Tuffy – a Collie. You can also see my Dad, Alfonso Messano and his garden. My brother Dominick Messano (with the dark hair) is playing with his friend Joey. We had not seen this short movie in over 30 years – but it is now preserved. Tuffy was a great dog – looked just like Lassie. She lived to be a ripe age of sixteen. Our next dog, Bradley, a...
