May 14, Celebrate the beloved Chihuahua
May 14 is a big holiday for little dogs everywhere, well more specifically to our friends the Chihuahua. We have been celebrating International Chihuahua Appreciation Day since 2010 thanks to the Internet.
It all started with one dog, Teaka, a Chihuahua owned by a woman named Nadia Alterio who operates famouschihuahua.com when she declared the day on Teaka’s fourteenth birthday.
Named after the state of Chihuahua in Mexico, this is the smallest breed of dog in the whole world, the tiny Chihuahua is between 5.9-9.1 inches in height and weighs around 3.3-6.6 pounds. It’s easy to get attached to these adorable little dogs, and we’re happy to report that they have a life expectancy of 12 to 20 years, making them very easily a BIG part of the family.
Just as all of their personalities are different, there are different types of Chihuahuas. We know some folks that have quite a collection of well-dressed and pampered Chihuahua fur babies. Here are the seven types that are recognized. Of course we also love the mutts where you recognize some Chihuahua with some other breed, mostly by their size, head shape, or personality.
- Smooth-Coat Chihuahua
- Long-Coat Chihuahua
- Apple Head Chihuahua
- Deer Head Chihuahua
- Teacup Chihuahua
- Fawn Chihuahua
- Hairless Chihuahua
So go ahead, celebrate with your Chihuahua for one more reason on May 14. Why not take your pup to lunch at one of your favorite dog-friendly outdoor restaurants. Usually beautiful weather, no matter where you live, by National Chihuahua Day. Oh and stop by Doggie Cakes too at 10418 US-19, Port Richey, FL 34668. We’re open 10 to 7 that day, this year.
